Linwood J. “Popedo” J. Benoit Sr., 67, a native and resident of Thibodaux, La., died at 12:11 p.m. Saturday, September 27.


He is survived by his wife, Elaine B. Benoit; three sons, Linwood J. Benoit Jr., Eric J. Benoit and Ned J. Benoit; three daughters, Tammy B. Naquin, Simona B. Chiasson and Valarie B. Lefeyre; one brother, Ned Benoit; two sisters, Faye Ordoyne and Barbara Leonard; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; and numerous relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ned J. Benoit Sr. and Marie Louis LeBlanc Benoit.


He was a longtime member of the Thibodaux Volunteer Fire Dept. Protector Fire Co. No. 2, served as 2nd Assistant Fire Chief from 1972-1974, 1st Assistant Fire Chief in 1975 and Fire Chief from 1976 to 1982. He was a recipient of the Durel Award and was retired from the City of Thibodaux after 21 years.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the American Diabetics Association.

Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, September 30, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Thibodaux with mass to follow. He will be buried at St. Joseph Cemetery.

Thibodaux Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
