Lula “Dean” Bernadine Hamby Cancienne, a native of Greer, S.C., and resident of Gibson, La., died Monday, April 1, 2013.


Mrs. Cancienne was a member of First United Methodist Church and past president of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary and United Methodist Women. She volunteered for 25 years in nursing homes and the V.A. Clinic where she was awarded Volunteer of the Year in 2010. She was also awarded Person of the Year at First United Methodist Church. She was a great softball coach for girls in the late 60’s and early 70’s. She enjoyed bowling and traveling, sewed really well and loved Saints and LSU Football. She was an avid reader and loved cooking, gardening and spending time with her family.


She is survived by her sons, Wayne (Jan) and Claude Jr. (Lois) Cancienne; daughters, Dolores (Dave) Taylor and Denise Pepperman; brother, Jack (Carolyn) Hamby; sister, Derleith Hamby; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Claude Cancienne Sr.; parents, George and Nannie Hamby; and brothers, George, J.D., Lacy, Doyle and Ebb Hamby.

Visitation will be 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, April 4, at Chauvin Funeral Home and 9 to 11 a.m. Friday, April 5, at First United Methodist Church with services to follow. Burial will be at Bayou Black Cemetery. (Chauvin)
