Ralph Leroy Bates, 73, a native of Kisatchie, La., and resident of Houma, La., died Saturday, May 3, 2014. 


Mr. Bates retired after 25 years of coaching basketball and teaching in Terrebonne Parish. He also spent many years working in the oil and gas industry. He was an avid outdoorsman who had a true love of fishing and hunting. He was devoted to his family and enjoyed sharing his love of sports with his grandchildren. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend.

He is survived by his wife, Janet Bates; stepmother, Lenda Bates; son, Lane (Anne) Bates; daughters, Kayla Guerrero and Karen (Dane) Arnold; brother, James Cobb; sisters, Roberta Noland, Debbie Schultz and Teresa Ott; and nine grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Bates and Lola Cobb; brother, Robert Bates; and sister, Barbara Bates. 


Visitation will be 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, May 8, at Chauvin Funeral Home and 9 to 11 a.m. Friday, May 9, at First Baptist Church with services to follow. Burial will be at St. Francis de Sales Cemetery No. 2. (Chauvin)
