Sheard Joseph Ber, 96, a native and resident of Thibodaux, La., died Wednesday, May 20.


He is survived by his wife, Theresa U. Ber; one son, Sheard A. Ber and wife, Debra; five grandchildren, Dr. S. Douglas Ber and wife, Leslie, Bonnie B. Kern and husband, Kevin, Monica B. Graves and husband, Ken, Lauren B, Litchfield and husband, Michael, and Dr. Benjamin S. Ber; nine great-grandchildren, Austin, Bradley, and Kristen Ber, Katie and Natalie Kern, Jordan, Matthew, Jonathan, and Micha Graves; and his caregiver, Betty Arcement.


He was preceded in death by his first wife, Louise Picou Ber; and his parents, Adolph and Louise M. Ber.

He was a plumbing contractor for 40 years and a Thibodaux City Inspector for 33 years. He was the Outstanding City Employee in 1995 and 1997. He was an outstanding member of the Louisiana Gas Association in 1983 and served on the City Zoning and Planning Commission. He was also honored with the Outstanding Service to the water industry for the South Central Region. He was a member of Plumbing and Mechanical Inspectors Association, Southern Building Code Association, Louisiana Gas Association, and Southern Plumbing, Heating, and Cooling Association.

Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Friday, May 22, at St. Joseph Co-Cathedral in Thibodaux, La. with Mass of Christian Burial to follow. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the E.D. White Endowment Fund.

Thibodaux Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
