Teacher outcry leads to tougher policy

Thomas Matthews Sr., 87, a native of Schriever, La., and a resident of Houma, La., died Monday, June 16.


He is survived by his wife, Emma B. Matthews of Houma; daughters, Emma Newton and husband, Willie, Joella Washington and Ella Thompson and husband Earl all of Houma; sons, Thomas Matthews Jr. And wife Patricia, and Larry Matthews and wife Ann of Houma; sister, Victoria Brown of Houma; 13 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.


He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Hattie Matthews; daughter, Delores Smith; brothers, James Sr., Junius, and Earl Matthews Sr.; sisters, Ida Scott, Daisy Matthews, Francis Nevers and Hattie Lewis; grandparents, George and Francis Matthews; and great-grandson, Marcus LaJohn Stoves.

He was a member of New Raising Sun Baptist Church. He was a World War II U.S. Army Veteran. He was also a member of Blaine C. Clay Lodge # 14, Royal Arch Mason, Shriners, Consistory and a 33 degree mason. His hobbies included farming and gardening.

Visitation will be 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday June 20, and 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday, June 21, at New Rising Sun Baptist Church in Houma. A wake service will be at 7 p.m. Friday at the church. The religious service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the church. He will be buried at the church cemetery.

Kennedy Funeral Home of Raceland is in charge of the arrangements.
