Velma D. Duet, 82, a native of Golden Meadow, La., and resident of Galliano, La., died Tuesday, Oct. 19, 2010


Mrs. Duet was the first female member to be elected to the Lafourche Parish School Board and remained a member of the board for 26 years of which she served four years as an executive board member. She also served on the Advisory Board at Citizen’s Bank. She was active with the Seafood Festival, Cajun Festival, and Oyster Festival and was a chairperson for many of the festival’s coronations and beauty contests. She also was a historian and president for La Societe De Cajun and helped organize and bring history and geneology to the people of the South Lafourche area. She also served as president of South Lafourche Chapter of CODOFIL who worked to preserve the French language in our area. She was a member of the Business and Professional Women, and the Lafourche Parish Tourist Commission. She served as a member and secretary of the South Lafourche Chamber of Commerce, and was a Cerebral Palsy Telethon phone operator volunteer for many years. She also served as a board member for Friends in Fellowship, a group organized to raise money for scholarships. Mrs. Duet gave multiple lectures at many universities and high schools and was an auxiliary member of the American Legion Post 315 in Galliano. She was also very active in the St. Joseph Church and parish as a lay minister, CCD teacher, renew leader choir member and commentator and served on the St. Joseph finance and building committee. She was a self-employed business owner, notary public, and real estate agent.

She is survived by her children, Jonathan (Theresa), Toby Sr. and Dollie Duet; nine grandchildren, Cherie (John) Dufrene, Chantell (Jason) Aupied, Jace (Amy) Duet, Michelle (Jean) Thibodaux, and Luke, Toby Jr., Jennifer, Dex and Cody Duet; eight great-grandchildren, Jaison Aupied, Brittlyn Guidry, Justin Dufrene, Noah Aupied, Dani Dufrene, Alexia Thibodaux, Phobe Thibodaux, and Jonnie Dufrene; daughter-in-law, Paulette Duet; and her sister, Brozena Barker.


She was preceded in death by her husband, George N. Duet; parents, Adam and Noemie Lafont Duet; two sons, Danny and Scotty Duet; one grandson, Scotty Duet; four brothers, George, Irby, Ervis, and Alton Duet; and one sister, Verna Dufrene.

She is buried at Cheramie Cemetery.
