Walter Bringaze, 87, a native of Quincy, Ill., and a resident of Houma, La., for 53 years, died Monday, Dec. 28, 2009, at his home.


A retired physician, Dr. Bringaze practiced obstetrics and gynecology in Houma until his retirement in 1990.


A member of St. Frances de Sales Co-cathedral, Dr. Bringaze was active with the St. Vincent de Paul Society and served on the board of the Tri-Parish Community Pharamcy. In 1971, he served as chief of staff at Terrebonne General Medical Center. He was a founding member of the Serra Club and Ellendale Country Club and served on the board of directors. He was an avid golfer and a bridge player.

Dr. Bringaze joined the Naval Air Corps in 1941 and was commissioned in the Marine Air Corps two years later. He fought during World War II in the Central Solomons and, later, in Japan. After the war, he earned a doctor of medicine degree from St. Louis University. After completing his residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Charity Hospital and Tulane University in New Orleans, he moved to Houma.


During his career, Dr. Bringaze attended nearly 6,000 deliveries.

He is survived by his wife, Joan; children, Mary Lee, Dr. Walter III, Dr. Virginia (Peter) Cancienne and Anne Bringaze; and four grandchildren, Elly, Kacy and Grant Bringaze, and Anna Cancienne.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Rose Bringaze; brother, Donald Bringaze; and sister, Evelyn Benyo.

He is buried at St. Francis de Sales Cemetery No. 2.
