Walter T. Daigle, 89, a native of Napoleonville, La., and resident of Labadieville, La., died Thursday, Feb. 10, 2011, after a long and courageous battle with prostate cancer.

Mr. Daigle moved to Valence Plantation in Labadieville 80 years ago when his father was hired as an overseer by E.G. Robichaux Inc. He was a member of St. Philomena Catholic Church, Labadieville Knights of Columbus Council 11061, American Legion Post 284 and Assumption Parish Farm Bureau. He served as a past member of the ASCS County Committee. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from Aug. 12, 1942 to Feb. 4, 1946. He then served in the Reserves from Feb. 5, 1946 to Feb. 6, 1949. He was a retired sugar-cane farmer, but gardening was his pleasure. He enjoyed every part of the gardening process, but most of all, he loved sharing his fruit and vegetables with others. As a Farm Bureau insurance agent, his main goal was service to his clients. Over the last 20 years, he received great pleasure and satisfaction from helping his wife with church and community activities. Among family and friends, he was often the one who was called upon to help in times of trouble or illness. Even during his own health struggles, he continued to worry more about others than himself. His family will always remember Walter as a kind and compassionate man with a gentle spirit. He was truly a “southern gentleman.”

He is survived by his wife, Ethel “Toonie” Daigle; daughters, Patricia (Selser) Lively and Rita (Kenneth) Murphy; stepdaughters, Patricia (Tom) Bender and Mary Susan (Dr. Scott) Farrar; stepsons, Ricky (Shirley) and Michael (Leslie) Lecompte; five grandchildren, Christine Labban, Scott Lively, and Ryan, Stephen and John Murphy; two great-grandchildren, Alden Grace Labban and Seth Murphy; 10 step-grandchildren; 13 step-great-grandchildren; sister, Lucy Cancienne; and brother, Harry (Grace) Daigle.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Oneita Harrison Daigle; three brothers, Everett, Felix and Earl Daigle; two sisters, Velda Daigle Boudreaux Talbot and Ann Frances “Princess” Borne; and his parents, Walter and Cecile Hebert Daigle.

The family wishes to express its appreciation to the staff of St. Joseph Hospice and caregivers, Barbara Taylor and Jane Wendt, for their compassionate care.

He is interred at St. Philomena Catholic Church Mausoleum.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the St. Philomena Restoration Fund, P.O. Box 99, Labadieville, LA 70372. (Landry’s)
