Wayne “Red” “Pop” James Mitchell, 93, a native of Sterling, Ill. and resident of Chackbay, La., died Monday, May 18.


He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Dortha Long Mitchell; two sons, David Kester and James Mitchell and wife, Barbara; eight grandchildren, Connie Sue Mitchell Lugo and husband, Joe, of Illinois, Angela Anderson of North Carolina, Jim “Jimbo” Mitchell Jr., Richard Mitchell and wife, Barbara, Kimberly Mitchell, Charles “Porky” Mitchell, Darla Kester Dickson, and Ricky Kester of Illinois; 12 great-grandchildren, Timothy, Tommy an Tiffany Mitchell, Maggie and Veronica Closser, Bethanie Mitchell, Aidan Tolbert, Matthew and Kody Kester, Ciara Dickson, Curtis and Kristen Kester; and several nieces and nephews.


He was preceded in death by his parents, Warren Mitchell and Jessie Kraft Mitchell; grandson, Tim Kester; brother, Norvel Mitchell; and sister, Druicille Petereson.

He was a retired part owner of Mitchell’s Transmission and Auto Repair in Chackbay, La. and a U.S. Army veteran of W.W. II.

Visitation will be 5:30 to 9 p.m. Thursday, May 21, and 8 to 10 a.m. Friday, May 22, at Thibodaux Funeral Home Chapel in Thibodaux, La with religious services to follow. Burial will be at Garden of Memories Cemetery in Gray, La.

Thibodaux Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
