William Johnston, 61, a native of Houma, La., died Sunday, May 1, 2011.

William “The Alligator Man” was placed in numerous institutions, which cared for special needs individuals. William liked many forms of art. He liked drawing, carving, and many kinds of music (especially Cajun and Country Western). The 25 years prior to coming to Malta, William’s mother cared for him in her home in Bayou Blue, La., until her death. Malta Opportunities Incorporated became William’s home between 2000 and present. The employees at MOI considered William as a part of their family, and William felt the same about them. He enjoyed many activities at MOI especially the dances, participating in Special Olympics, and trips to Glasgow.

William loved all the people he ever met in Malta, because they all welcomed him as part of their community. Often, he would greet the people of Malta by their first names. The people in Malta accepted William as one of their own, and William felt proud that he lived there.

He is survived by his brothers, Wayne White, Gary (Marilyn), Larry, James (Rosalie) and John (Mary); sisters, Florence McBride, Patricia (Eddie) Mahoney, Jeannie (Ed) Litolff and Susan; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Alvin and Hilda Johnston.

He is buried at Mona Cemetery.

Memorials should be made out to Special Olympics in honor of William. (Kirkwood)
