Dear Editor,

I know this may not seem important to most, but why doesn’t Houma celebrate Independence Day on the 4th as it should?

It seems that in the last few years the parish celebrates the 4th when it is convenient. Does anyone in this parish think the Revolutionary War was a convenient war for the Continental Soldier? Does anyone think lives were lost or that the families of the soldier’s suffered a loss?

The American Revolutionary War was the most important war in the history of this country. Without the Revolutionary War there would be no America, no 4th of July to celebrate!

That being said, it is especially important to keep us grounded in our own history because there are those in this country wishing to separate us from it. There are those in powerful places wishing to destroy what the founders put in place. We must never allow that to happen.

We must preserve and celebrate our freedoms in public unabashed.

The Fourth of July stands as our most important testimony to the freedom of the United States of America.

My family will not be celebrating on June 29th we will be celebrating with the community of Thibodaux on July 4th as we all should.

Bernard Hargenrader,

Houma, La.
