The pilgrims and Native Americans in Plymouth, Mass., didn’t know it then, but they started a tradition – one of coming together and giving thanks. Now this Thanksgiving legacy continues today, and it’s an important time to stop and reflect on the many reasons to be thankful this year.

Every day, I’m thankful to live in Louisiana. Our state is unique, and our delicious food, rich heritage and distinct culture make me proud to call it home. And it doesn’t hurt that the Saints resigned Drew Brees!

As a United States senator, I’m also thankful for the opportunity to fight for Louisiana common sense in Washington.

Here at home, I’m also thankful for our new conservative majority in the state Legislature. This more reform-minded wave has given many reasons to be a bit more thankful, like enacting sweeping education reforms that empower parents to have more direction in their child’s education.

And I’m personally very thankful that our legislature defeated the abuse of legacy lawsuits, an issue I spent a lot of time speaking out against this year. Ending legacy lawsuit abuse means that Louisiana will remain a leader in responsibly producing energy – and strengthening American energy job creation.

Thanksgiving also serves as an important reminder of how blessed we are to be Americans. Despite a disappointing election result, we still live in a country of great opportunity, one that could only be imagined at that first Thanksgiving in 1621.

The pilgrims who traveled to America came in search of the freedom and opportunity that we enjoy today. It’s a great privilege, and it’s one that many around the world still hope to attain.

That’s why I fight every day in the U.S. senate to uphold those privileges.

I’m looking forward to spending my holiday with Wendy and our kids. And I wish you and your family a very Happy Thanksgiving.

As always, I’m interested in hearing your thoughts on how we can help more Louisiana families with the issues important to you. Please contact me with your ideas at any of my state offices or in my Washington office. You can also reach me online at http://vitter.senate.gov.
