The H.L. Bourgeois boys’ basketball team learned a lot about itself this weekend.

They learned they can win close games. They learned they can hang with top-tier local competition.

And they learned that when there’s a trophy on the line, they have kids capable of making big plays and rising to the occasion to bring it home.

The Braves won the Assumption Tournament this weekend, posting a 3-0 record on the weekend – all games that came down to the final possession.

The Braves beat Patterson 78-75 in the opening round, Lutcher 65-63 in the semifinals, then Thibodaux 76-74 in the finals.

Those three wins improve H.L. to 6-1 on the season. They also re-established what coach Andrew Caillouet has been preaching since the preseason: This bunch of kids have a motor that just never stops.

“We play so hard. The kids work and give us everything they’ve got,” Caillouet said earlier this season. “It’s been a joy to see them put in that effort and it’s always fun to be around those groups that want more for themselves and I think this team has that.”

They have Deondre Buggage, too, which helps.

Buggage was named Tournament MVP after scoring 31 points in the Championship Game. He was also big in the Braves’ other triumphs – all which were decided literally in the final seconds.

The Braves next move to trying to take care of their own tournament.

H.L. Bourgeois hosts its own event this weekend – an event which will feature several of the top teams in the area.
