The Nicholls State University football team will start the 2019 season ranked nationally.

STATS FCS released their Preseason Top 25 poll on Monday morning and the Colonels are No. 12 in the country, according to voters.

Nicholls, which finished last season ranked No. 14, is one of two Southland teams to be ranked in the poll. Traditional Southland Conference powerhouse Sam Houston State is ranked No. 23.

Several league teams were close to being ranked and received votes, including Central Arkansas, McNeese State, Incarnate Word, Lamar, Abilene Christian and Southeastern Louisiana.

Nicholls coach Tim Rebowe has said throughout the offseason that he loves expectations.

“It’s sure better than being picked last,” Rebowe said with a laugh.

But the coach said he and his team also know that predictions and polls are not what makes a team’s season great.

“We know we have to perform on the field and prove a lot of people right.
