In their first home match of the 2017 season, the Nicholls volleyball team flexed its muscles and picked up its second win of the season.

The Colonels swept Mississippi Valley State on Tuesday, posting a straight-set victory (25-19, 25-23, 25-14) to improve to 2-8 on the season.

Freshman Imanie Williams was huge in the win, posting a career-high 16 kills – a performance that caught the attention of coach Tommy Harold, who said he was pleased with what he saw.

“(Imanie) was a stud,” Harold said. “She went out there and took some swings on the ball. She was aggressive and that’s what we’ve been trying to get her to do.”

The only real drama in the match came in the second set when Nicholls used a couple clutch points to grab control of the match.

With both teams tied 23-all, Nicholls recorded consecutive kills – one by Stephanie Tobison and another by Williams to win 25-23.

With the momentum and a 2-0 set advantage, Nicholls cruised in the final set, scoring a comfortable victory.

Nicholls will return to action this weekend in Memphis at the Memphis Invitational. The Colonels will face UT-Martin, Memphis and UL-Monroe during the event.

Next week, the Colonels will begin Southland Conference play.

Harold said the Colonels have a chance to make waves in conference play, but must find consistency in their play throughout matches.

“We’ve got to be able to maintain that level for an entire match,” Harold said. “Not just get on ebbs and flows.”
