After the game they were going to the Homecoming bonfire.

During the game, they were earning a convincing win over District 6-I rival South Terrebonne Lady Gators. The H.L. Bourgeois Lady Braves swept South Terrebonne 3-0 (25-12, 25-9, 25-15), last Thursday in Houma.

H.L. Bourgeois coach Peter Verret said he was most impressed with his team’s ability to block out the distractions of Homecoming week and win the game.

“Everybody’s mind was over there (the bonfire),” he said. “They were ready to get out. But like I said, my biggest impression of my team was our maturity. We’re starting to mature. I don’t want us to fall in the middle of crucial points (of games), and they didn’t (fall) today.”

South Terrebonne kept the score close in the early part of each game, but failed to prevent the Lady Braves from pulling away. South Terrebonne coach Phil Walther said his team’s biggest problem is consistency. “Just consistency in general,” he said. “We’d get a little bit of a run, then we’d let it slip. We let them get a little bit too far ahead of us, then we’d start to get a little bit of momentum, but … H.L. Bourgeois is too good. They get too far ahead of you and it’s too hard to get back.”

Sadie Hebert led the way for the Lady Braves with 12 kills. Chelsy Steele and Brittany Rogers added seven kills each.

Brianne Bergeron added 28 assists.

Brittany Thompson paced South Terrebonne (6-15 overall, 0-2 district) with three kills and a block. Jamie Romero added eight assists, and Megan Martin contributed 18 digs.

The first game saw the teams stay close in the beginning. With the score tied 6-6, H.L. Bourgeois (16-14 overall, 2-0 district) took an 8-6 led and held on to it the rest of the way, eventually building an 18-9 lead, keyed by three kills by Steele.

After the game was tied 6-6, the Lady Braves finished the game on an 18-6 run to take a 1-0 lead in the match.

“In the beginning of any of the matches, most teams play their best,” said Verret. “And that’s what I told the girls … expect South Terrebonne to come out and really play you hard, and expect to be challenged at the beginning.

The Lady Braves took that advice to heart, and won a convincing 25-9 result in the second game. With H.L. Bourgeois leading 4-3, they went on a 10-1 run to take a 14-4 lead. Hebert contributed three kills to the game-breaking rally.

The Lady Gators staged a mini-rally that cut the lead to 15-8, but never got any closer as H.L. Bourgeois pulled away for a 2-0 advantage in the match.

The third game saw much of the same, as the Lady Braves pulled away from a 4-3 advantage with a 6-1 run that extended their lead to 10-4.

With H.L. Bourgeois leading 13-6, South Terrebonne fought back to make it 13-9 and then 16-13, but they would not get closer. H.L. Bourgeois scored the next five points to take a 21-13 lead, and the eventual 25-15 win.

“In the end, we pulled away,” said Verret. “Right now, we’re really hitting the ball and controlling the net as well as our serves. The kids, every call I gave them, they just about nailed them. We kept (South Terrebonne) off balance, because we’d pull them in tight to serve short and then we’d hit it deep.”

With district play having started last week, Verret feels his team is peaking at the right time. “We’ve been eliminating the errors more and more,” he said. “That’s all we can do.”
