The Capital One Cardinals gave up six runs to Patterson Thursday afternoon in the first inning. Unfortunately for Patterson, the Cardinals have averaged 10 runs a game so far during the young Swampland baseball season.

They did it again against Patterson.

Despite falling behind 6-0 in the first inning, the Capital One Cardinals rallied back to defeat Patterson 12-6 in Swampland baseball action at the Cardinal Diamond.

After giving up six runs on five hits, Austin Leboeuf was taken out after just two-thirds of an inning of work. Philip Lyons then came in and pitched 5 1/3 shutout innings to help the Cardinals (2-1) rally back and keep the Patterson bats in check.

Lyons allowed five hits and no runs while striking out three in the victory.

“Philip did a great job of coming in and just pitching lights out for us,” Cardinals Head Coach Shane Trosclair said. “He did everything he needed to keep us in the game so we could eventually make the comeback.”

After two quick runs, it appeared Leboeuf had finally settled down, striking out Patterson’s Andrew Bienvenu and forcing Cody Fontenot into a fielder’s choice RBI for the first two outs.

However, after walking Devin Bartholomew and hitting Ethan Smoorenburg with a pitch the Cardinals suddenly found themselves down 4-0.

It wasn’t until Grant Lagrange had a two RBI single through the gap, putting the Cardinals down six, that Trosclair pulled Leboeuf in favor of Lyons.

After finally getting out of the top half of the first inning, the Cardinals began chipping away at the lead. Scoring two runs on a fielding and throwing error, and eventually cutting the deficit to 6-4, led by Chris Callahan’s single to centerfield.

The Cardinals took the lead 7-6 in the bottom of the second following an RBI by Lyons, and two RBIs by Trey Rodrigue.

From that point, the Cardinals never looked back.

“When we were down by six, I told the guys it’s a good thing we average 10 runs a game,” Trosclair said. “Once we started doing the small things, I knew we could get back in it.”

The Cardinals added three more in the fourth thanks to a Patterson (2-1) fielding error, and RBIs by Leboeuf and Tyler Duplantis, to take a 10-6 lead before adding the final two runs of the game in the fifth on a two run double by Brett Loup.

Jake Gravois came in for the Cardinals in the seventh inning and closed out the game, allowing no hits and striking out one.

Patterson assistant coach Tyler Jensen said not enough consistency has troubled the team in the past.

“We tend to make too many silly errors,” Jensen said. “E.D. White did a good job of getting the hits they needed. We played well early but we have to learn how to stay consistent for every inning of every game.”

John Daigle went three-for-three and Rodrigue went two-for-three with two RBIs to lead the Cardinals batters.
