With football season right around the corner, many fans still haven’t gotten the chance to become familiar with new Nicholls coach Charlie Stubbs.

The Colonels’ Athletics Department hopes to fix that in the month of August thanks to their “Huddle with the Colonels” tour, which will make three stops in the Tri-parish area before the team’s opening game Sept. 4 at San Diego State.

“We are excited to get out in the community and let the fans get a chance to meet our coaches and players,” said Stubbs. “We are going to visit our regional area, rallying support for our upcoming season.”

The tour will kick off this coming Tuesday at South Lafourche High School in Galliano from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Garnering support from the southern portion of Lafourche Parish is something the new coach said he hopes to do during his tenure with the program.

In the 2010 signing class, the Colonels signed a pair of Tarpons, Mark Mayberry and Rafe Plaisance.

“It’s a real good school,” said South Lafourche football coach Terry Farmer on National Signing Day. “With the new coach coming in, there’s a change up there. I’ll be honest, I hope we can start to send one or two a year there.”

Following the trip to Galliano, the tour will move to Vandebilt Catholic High School for an Aug. 10 meeting, also beginning at 5:30 p.m.

The Colonels currently have five players on their 2010 roster listed from Houma.

“Our community outreaches to Galliano and Houma are going to be a lot of fun, considering that we have a good fan-base in each city with student-athletes from each area,” Stubbs said.

The final stop on the tour will be the week of the season opener – an Aug. 30 gathering at the Thibodaux Country Club from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m.

At all of the events, Stubbs, as well as his staff and select players will field questions from everyone in attendance.

In addition to hearing from coaches and players, season ticket information, as well as Colonels’ merchandise will be available for those interested.

Building steam in advance of the football season is going to be the big theme of the meetings for Stubbs, who has said he wants to recruit primarily within a 100-mile radius of the Thibodaux area when possible.

“We’re truly a regional university,” he said during spring practices. “So what happens is you sign local kids, then all of a sudden, you put people in the seats, as well, because the community embraces the team. That’s what we’re looking to do.”

The Galliano and Houma meetings are free to public. There is a $15 charge for the Thibodaux event.

“It is an exciting time for Nicholls football, and we want our community to get a chance to personally get to know all the staff and student-athletes that will be representing the university and the area,” the coach added.
