After inking three recruits on signing day, Nicholls State Head Basketball Coach J.P. Piper announced the addition of a fourth player earlier this month.

Fred Hunter, a 6-5, 230-pound wingman, will don the red and gray for the 2008-2009 basketball season. Hunter, a product of Denton High School in Denton, Texas, led Class-4A in scoring with 22 points per game.

He was also second in rebounds, averaging 12.2 rebounds per game.

Piper said the addition of Hunter improves the Colonels on both sides of the ball.

“I am very excited to have Fred in the program,” the coach said. “He is a great student and a tremendous basketball player. He has a chance to make a difference early with his ability to score and rebound.”

Hunter was also an Academic All-State selection with a 3.6 GPA and preseason McDonald’s All-American selection prior to his senior season.

He will join three players the Colonels signed in April, including two fellow Texans.

Chris Iles of Alief Hastings High School in Houston and Kyle Ford of Whitehouse High School in Whitehouse, Texas, are the other Texas-born teammates to ink with the Colonels.

They will be joined by Cameron McCallum, who hails from Mowbray College in West Melton, Australia.

Iles, a 5-foot, 10-inch guard, averaged 13 points and 5 assists per game in his senior season, earning First Team All-Region in his senior season.

Ford is a 6-foot, 5-inch guard/forward, who led Whitehouse to a 29-2 overall record with 83 three-pointers made last season.

He averaged 13 points and 5.5 rebounds, which earned him All-District, All-State and All-Region selections following his senior season.

McCallum is a 6-foot, 8-inch forward, who averaged 19.5 points and 14.0 rebounds for Diamond valley in Australia.
