Eleven games and counting.

That’s the shutout streak the Vandebilt Catholic girls’ soccer team carries into Friday’s state title game against St. Michael following Saturday’s 4-0 Division II semifinal victory over DeRidder.

The Lady Terriers (20-8 overall, 8-0 in district) collected goals from Jordan Picou, Candace Alexander and Cayla Chatman (two). However, Vandebilt coach Phillip Amedee was most impressed with his team’s smothering defense, which limited the Lady Dragons to only six shots.

“As much as what was made about the goals we scored, the real difference was that we continued to play solid defense,” he said. “We have not conceded a goal in eight district and three playoff games.”

St. Michael advanced to the final following a 1-0 win over Parkway in double overtime. The championship will be held in Baton Rouge, but the site and time had yet to be determined as of press time.

“They (St. Michael) are very scrappy,” Amedee explained. “They are very intense and play really aggressively. They have quality players in key positions. It should be an excellent matchup.”

Nonetheless, Amedee is optimistic with how his team continues to step up its game.

“Right now, the girls are determined,” he said. “The most impressive thing about this team is how they continue to play for each other. No one wants to let their teammates down. They’re a pleasure to coach because they exemplify what a team attitude is all about.”

Vandebilt’s last trip to the state championship was in 2006.
