Things started off pretty well for E.D. White in their quest to advance to the state championship game.

Through four innings, the Cardinals had a 3-0 lead and seemed poised to live to play another day in Ruston’s warm, but rainy weekend weather.

But Cardinal pitching was not able to keep the brakes off Brusly High School’s offense much longer and they tied the game in the fifth inning before winning it with a walk-off single from Michael Hebert in the eighth inning to clinch victory and end E.D. White’s season.

“We didn’t get the hits. And then, they happened to get one with two runners on base, late in the fifth inning,” said E.D. White coach Shane Trosclair. “And everyone knows what happened from there.”

Brusly coach Trevor Dupont agreed and said the team made plays when they needed to with their season on the line.

“All year long, we’ve been getting clutch hits,” Brusly coach Trevor Dupont told the Advocate. “It just took a little while today.”

The Brusly rally marked the first loss of the season for E.D. White left-handed ace, Heath Thiel, who came into the game in the sixth inning and allowed the winning run.

Had the Cardinals advanced to the title game, the 280-pounder, would have started in the title game.

But Brogan Vice started in the semifinals and the Cardinals got him early support, scoring two runs on a two-RBI triple from Dakota Gravois.

The Cardinals added another in the fifth inning on an RBI single by Austin LeBeouf before the Brusly rally in the bottom half of the inning.

E.D. White’s 21-game winning streak was snapped with the loss and the team ended their season with a 31-5 record.

And for Trosclair, he’s proud of his team, but knows the Cardinals may have let an opportunity at the state title slip through their fingers.

“It all goes back to their pitches, and us executing offensively. And this is this first time, in 21 games, that we did not do that,” he said.

The Cardinals were the only team in the Tri-parishes to advance to the semifinals in the LHSAA/State Farm State Semifinals.
