With the clock running out, the E.D. White sideline was not focused on the game as much as it was focused on the traditional Gatorade bath it was about to give head coach Kyle Lasseigne at the conclusion of its 20-12 win over West St. Mary.

Despite the chilly weather, Lasseigne did not mind getting soaked. “Absolutely, they surprised me,” Lasseigne said of the Gatorade bath. “I was worried about the clock and all kinds of other things that were going through my head. A big surprise, but I’ll take that.”

Lasseigne did not mind the celebration because it signified E.D. White’s first outright District 7-3A championship since 2002. “It kind of says something about the work our players have put in since last season,” said Lasseigne. “We weren’t satisfied with our season, last season, and kind of made a decision that we were going to change it around in our district and go play hard. We battled through a lot of things this season — early on especially — and kind of hung tough until the second season came around and we put it together at the right time.”

The championship-clinching game did not come at an easy cost. West St. Mary’s squad, which has just over 30 players on the roster, kept the game close after E.D. White scored on its first possession.

After forcing a punt, the Cardinals took over at West St. Mary’s 41-yard line. On the Cardinals third play from scrimmage, Drey Trosclair connected with Chase Clement on a 51-yard touchdown pass. The extra point put E.D. White ahead 7-0.

From there, West St. Mary stuck close, eventually scoring on the third play of the second quarter. Lawrence Lofton tossed a pass to Juan Keith Shearron along the sideline. Shearron slipped a tackle and scored on a 64-yard connection. However, the extra point was low, keeping E.D. White ahead 7-6.

The Wolfpack entered E.D.White territory twice in the second quarter, but both drives ended in interceptions, with one occurring in the endzone. “My senior quarterback kind of forced it there,” said Wolfpack coach Andre Lockley. “Right there, we throw the ball away, and we come back. We have a little eighth grader that can kick pretty consistently from about 35 yards. Maybe we might get some momentum.”

But the momentum was not there. The teams played a scoreless third quarter, before E.D. White scored two unanswered touchdowns to take a 20-6 lead.

The first score came on Trosclair and Clement’s second connection of the night — a 23-yard scoring strike with 7:57 left in the fourth quarter.

West St. Mary fumbled the kickoff, and ED. White wasted no time getting on the board, with what appeared to be a game-clinching score. Trosclair connected on his third touchdown of the night on a 10-yard pass to Max Ledet. Billy Foret’s extra point made it 20-6.

But the Wolfpack was not done.

Three plays into their next drive, Lofton tossed a 44-yard touchdown to Robert Lewis. The two-point attempt failed, making it 20-12.

E.D. White recovered the onside kick, and ran out the final 3:36.

Lasseigne said West St. Mary always gives E.D. White fits because of their athleticism. “It’s always like this when we play West St. Mary,” he said. “It’s probably because they have such quality athletes that it’s tough for us to match up sometimes.”

Still, the Cardinals will enter the playoffs as the No. 23 seed in Class 3A. They travel to No. 10 seed Parkview. “It’s a brand new season, just like this district season was,” said Lasseigne. “And that’s always a refreshing thought for a team. It gives you some new enthusiasm going into the playoffs, and I expect our kids to prepare well and go play well next Friday.”

On the night, E.D. White was outgained 319 to 279.
