After a 13-year stint in Major League Baseball, former Nicholls State Colonel Darryl Hamilton was inducted into the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame Saturday.

In three seasons with the Colonels (1984-86), Hamilton stole 140 bases, a record that still stands today.

Hamilton had his best year for the Colonels in 1985, when he led the team in runs (65), hits (77), stolen bases (52), triples (5), walks (38) and batting average (.379).

The Milwaukee Brewers drafted Hamilton in the 11th round of the 1986 MLB draft and he later went on to play for the Rangers, Giants, Rockies and Mets organizations.

In his 13 seasons, Hamilton averaged .291 at bat. He had 1,333 hits, 454 RBIs, 51 home runs and 163 stolen bases.

Former Colonel safety signs with Redskins

Former Nicholls standout safety Kareem Moore reached a contract agreement with the Washington Redskins on Friday. Terms of the deal were not released.

Moore, 5-11 and 213 pounds had arthroscopic knee surgery on April 29. He was sidelined for the Redskins’ off-season workouts.

“Kareem may not be ready until the second week of training camp, but we expect him to play in some preseason games,” head coach Jim Zorn said. “It may not be until the third or fourth [preseason game], but we expect him to play.”

Moore, a sixth round draft pick, was the Southland Conference Defensive Player of the Year last season and notched a total of 141 career tackles while starting the past two seasons for the Colonels. He started 17 of 21 games.

The Okolona, Miss., native was major contributor in Nicholls’ NCAA record-tying four interceptions returned for touchdowns in a game with their 58-0 victory over Northwestern State on Oct. 6 2007.
