Four Louisiana State sports on a roll lately

Something interesting is going on in Tiger Town these days.


All four major sports in season – men’s and women’s basketball, baseball and softball – are on a roll.


The LSU baseball team completed a sweep of Duquesne over the weekend. The Tigers are now 7-1 and have won five games in a row.

Also on Sunday, the men and women’s basketball teams were victorious. The men beat Georgia at home, 71-64, to win their third straight for the first time this season. Despite the late-season charge, the Tigers are now 12-16 overall and 5-9 in the conference and will need to win the upcoming SEC Tournament (March 13-16) to get into the NCAA Tournament.


The women’s basketball team managed to make history on Sunday with its 69-49 rout at Mississippi State. The Lady Tigers (25-4) finished the SEC regular season with a perfect 14-0 mark. And the softball team went 5-1 over the weekend and won the Easton Purple & Gold Challenge in Baton Rouge. The Lady Tigers (14-4) have won six of their last seven games.


LSU GETS MAINIERI’S 900th CAREER WIN

On Sunday, Matt Clark and D.J. LeMahieu each launched two home runs in the 12-2 victory and head coach Paul Mainieri’s 900th career win.


For the series, LSU hit 14 home runs and outscored Duquesne, 44-14. In the series finale’, Clark led the Tigers with three hits and three runs batted in. On the mound, Ryan Verdugo picked up the win after allowing two hits, a run and striking out four in five innings.


On Saturday, LSU posted a 12-run third inning en route to a 22-11 victory.

In the big inning, Clark had two homers, while Blake Dean and Matt Gaudet each had homers. In the 23-hit attack, Gaudet had four hits and three RBIs, while Dean and Clark each finished with four runs batted in. Jordan Brown got the victory after allowing six hits and six runs in five innings of work.


In the series’ first game, LSU posted a 10-1 victory. Jared Bradford got the victory after allowing three hits, a run and striking out seven in six innings. Offensively, LeMahieu, Clark and Leon Landry each had a pair of RBIs.


The Tigers started off their week with a 9-1 victory over Southern on Tuesday and a 10-1 win against Mississippi Valley State on Wednesday. Both games were at home.

This week, LSU plays host to Michigan State today at 3 p.m. before welcoming Stetson in this weekend for a three-game series (Friday, 7 p.m.; Saturday, 2 p.m.; Sunday, 1 p.m.).


THORNTON, RANDOLPH EXPLOSIVE FOR LSU


The Tigers started off their week with a 62-55 win at South Carolina and then came home on Sunday to beat Georgia.

Against the Bulldogs, Marcus Thornton exploded for 36 points and 10 rebounds, while Anthony Randolph added 19 points.


Against South Carolina, Randolph had 20 points and 10 rebounds. Thornton added 14 points, while Chris Johnson had 14 points and 10 rebounds and Garrett Temple chimed in with 11 points. LSU will conclude the regular season on Saturday at Mississippi State (3 p.m. on Raycom Sports Television).


LADY TIGERS GEARING UP FOR SEC

The Lady Tigers completed their SEC dominance by getting 20 points and 12 rebounds from Sylvia Fowles against MSU. Quinna Chaney added 18 points and Erica White contributed 10 points in the contest.


LSU started the week by falling to top-ranked Connecticut, 74-69. Fowles had 26 points and 11 rebounds in the loss. Chaney added 22 points in the game.

The Lady Tigers put a 83-46 whipping on Arkansas on Thursday at home. Chaney had 20 points and Fowles added 11 points as the duo only played for a combined 41 minutes in the blowout win.

LSU will now move to the SEC Tournament and play either Ole Miss or Mississippi State on Friday at noon. The SEC tourney concludes on Sunday.

TIGERS WIN EASTON PURPLE & GOLD TITLE

The Lady Tigers won the first two games of the Easton Purple and Gold Challenge against Southern Miss and South Alabama, fell to Penn State and then reeled off three more wins against Tulsa, South Alabama and then Tulsa again for the tournament title.

On Sunday, Dani Hofer tossed a complete-game victory with a run on three hits and 10 strikeouts in the 6-1 win.

Cody Trahan picked up the 1-0 victory against South Alabama earlier in the day. She allowed four hits and struck out 10. Tayl’r Hollis was named the tournament Most Valuable Player after hitting .412 (7-for-17) with two doubles, a home run and five runs batted in. Killian Roessner (three home runs, five RBIs) and Shannon Stein (four RBIs, three runs scored) were named to the all-tournament team.

The Lady Tigers play Nicholls State in Thibodaux today at 6 p.m., and then open SEC play by playing host to Georgia this weekend (doubleheader staring at 1 p.m. on Saturday and a single game on Sunday at 1 p.m.).

FOOTBALL SPRING GAME IS APRIL 5

LSU’s annual football spring game has been scheduled for Saturday, April 5, at Tiger Stadium.

Tickets for the event are available now on LSUsports.net.

Kickoff for the LSU spring game is set for 5 p.m.

LSU will offer several different ways for fans to gain free admission to the spring game. Fans have the option of printing a redeemable coupon off the Internet at www.lsusports.net. The coupon will then have to redeemed at the LSU ticket office for a free ticket to the spring game. In order to be free, this coupon must be redeemed prior to game day.

Another option is paying a $1 processing fee to be able to print your spring game ticket from home.

By signing up for this option on LSUsports.net, fans will have their spring game ticket emailed to them, which they can then print at home.

Free admission can also be obtained by presenting a baseball ticket from the LSU-Alabama contest, which will be held earlier that day at Alex Box Stadium.

LSU students will be admitted free of charge by having their ID card scanned at the gate.

Those fans that choose not to take advantage of the free ticket also have the option of paying $5 prior to the day of the game for a ticket or paying $10 on game day for admission.

All tickets to the spring game will be general admission with the seating starting on the east and west sidelines.
