The Terrebonne Parish Council’s Community Development and Planning Committee passed a resolution at its Feb. 25 meeting requesting that cable television providers in the parish carry New Orleans Hornets basketball games.

The resolution was sent to the New Orleans City Council to help support the city’s push to widen access to Hornets games to residents of nearby parishes.

The Hornets can relinquish its contract with the state to stay in the New Orleans Arena if the team does not average 14,735 fans a game through next season. As of Feb. 7, the team was a few thousand spectators below that figure.

“It’s beneficial for us to get this reception,” Councilman Clayton Voisin said. “We have a good product with the Hornets.”

The resolution states that televising the games locally “will promote a wholesome, family oriented sporting activity and will encourage attendance at the area team games.”

Cox Sports Television has the exclusive right to broadcast Hornets games. Voisin said if the company were to broadcast the contests via cable television in Terrebonne, subscribers would have the option of paying (a probable) $5 extra per month to receive the games.

In 2003, Charter Communications, which provides cable television service to parts of Lafourche and Terrebonne parishes, began offering Cox Sports Television, which included Hornets games. To receive Cox Sports, customers had to subscribe to a package of channels costing $5 more a month.

On Feb. 19, Charter turned down a deal from Cox to offer Cox Sports Television either over Charter’s expanded basic service or digitally.

Cox is broadcasting nearly 80 percent of the Hornet’s regular-season games this season.
