Before the start of any sport season, every team sets out with the same goal in mind – win the district title.

For a third straight year, that goal was reached by the Houma Christian Lady Warriors’ volleyball team with its 3-0 (25-17, 25-10, 25-21) victory over Central Catholic of Morgan City last week.

The feat capped off a dominating season for the Lady Warriors as they finished an impressive 32-6 overall.

The team next sets their sights on a bigger prize heading into this week’s playoff games – a run at the state title.

A strong finish to the season, in which the Lady Warriors put together a 14-game win streak, has the small private school entering the playoffs at just the right time with a spotless 8-0 record in District 6-V.

The performance was enough to earn the team a first round bye in the playoffs as one of the Top 8 teams in Class C.

“The girls have just worked hard all year long and even in games where they were behind, they pulled together and were able to fight through it and come back,” head coach Christi Crowdus said.

The real reason for the dominance: the experience of the team.

A large part of the team’s success is attributed to head coach Christi Crowdus’s six seniors – five of whom started all season and all of whom contributed in some form. Those seniors, Monica Parfait, Natalie Voisin, Lauren Crowdus, Shira LeGreca, Courtney Collie and Macie Martinez have been the leaders on the floor all season long for the Lady Warriors.

“Our seniors have been a very large part of our success this year. They all demonstrate great leadership and work ethic, which rubs off on the younger players,” Crowdus said. “They have done a great job.”

Even though the team typically reaches the playoffs, they have yet to make it past the quarterfinals. In order to change their fortune this season, the coach said the team has to ensure that they are consistent at receiving the serve.

With the first round bye, it will only take two wins for the team to achieve their goal.

“Right now, we are just focusing on the task at hand,” Crowdus said. “We have a bye in the first round and we just take that one game at a time. Hopefully, all of our hitters will be on. If that happens, hopefully, we have a great chance.”

After playing quality competition in the pre-district slate, the coach feels her team is ready for the increased intensity of the playoffs.

“Playing against teams like Terrebonne, I believe, helped us in the long run,” she said. “They were probably the strongest team we’ll face this season, including the playoffs. Even though we did not win, I feel it benefited us to have played them and it’s something we can carry in the playoffs.”
