Last week’s Lafourche Parish track-and-field meet at Central Lafourche High School is mainly about two things – bragging rights and getting prepared for the bigger meets.

Two schools were able to leave with the bragging rights, but all four that participated look to use the meet as a steppingstone to bigger and better things with regional, district and state meets still to come.

On the boys’ side, a dynasty continued as the South Lafourche Tarpons added another parish crown to their resume.

The Tarpons compiled 110 points on the night with Thibodaux (85), Central Lafourche (48) and E.D. White (33) finishing behind them.

The Tarpons had first-place finishes in four field events. Rusty Borne won both the long jump (22-02-25) and triple jump (43-08) while Colby Thibodaux (142-08) took home the javelin title.

Ross Dufrene won the fourth field event, the pole vault, with a height of 13 feet.

On the track side, the Tarpons brought six first-place finishes back to Galliano. They had the fastest times in the 200-meter relay with a time of 1:32.97 and the 400-meter relay with a time of 3:38.26. Individually, Blaine Gisclair won the 1,600-meter (4:44.63) and the 3,200-meter (10:22.8) relays.

Logan Harris (16.14) won the 110-meter hurdles while Dexter Owensby (2:03.49) and Jovi Billiot (41.49) won the 800- and 300-meter relays, respectively.

Because of the Tarpons’ dominance over the last several years, head coach Joey Guidroz said he’s stopped keeping track.

“I told the kids that I wouldn’t count anymore,” he said. “This is nice, but we’re focused on the future. What’s more important is what’s coming up. We’re focused on the future. But our kids were ready. They performed really well.”

“We’re going to build on this and prepare ourselves for what’s ahead,” he added.

The Tarpons’ closest competitor, Thibodaux, had the second most first place finishes. Finishing first and second in the high jump was Brandon Thompson and Shavon Coleman. Also winning the 100- and 200-meter dash was college football prospect Trovon Reed.

On the girls’ side, the race wasn’t as set, with Central Lafourche edging Thibodaux 80 to 79. South Lafourche (69) and E.D. White (47) finished behind them.

The race for first came down to the final event, which is only fitting, said Central Lafourche girls’ track coach Chris Arnold.

“We’ve been chasing Terrebonne all season long in the regular meets so we wanted to have a strong showing and catch them in our upcoming meets. We knew it would be close between us and Thibodaux (at the parish meet).”

“It came down to the last event. I told them they needed the score to put us over the top and they responded well.”

Janie Dufrene helped put the Lady Trojans over the top by winning both the 100- and 200-meter relays, edging Thibodaux’s Demetria Perry both times.

The Lady Trojans were most impressive in the field events, winning three of the events.

Kiera Smith took two of those titles – the shot put and discus throw – with distances of 34 feet and 104.08 feet, respectively.

Dufrene also won the triple jump with a distance of 35 feet, 4 inches.

Arnold said his team would go back to practice this week and look to build on their solid performance.

“These girls know what they can do now and what they need to work on,” he said. “We’ll have a few more schools next time, but they know what they are capable of and we’ll tackle it one event at a time and work hard at it. “

“I give the girls all the credit,” he added.
