One of the biggest athletic weeks of the year for LSU proved to a be a huge success across the board as Tiger teams combined to go 17-3 in sporting events held this week, including a sweep by the baseball team in Paul Mainieri’s debut as head coach as well as an Easton Tiger Classic title by the softball team.


In Mainieri’s Tiger debut, LSU posted a sweep over St. Mary’s, winning 4-3 on Friday, 7-6 on Saturday and 6-2 on Sunday.

On Friday, Blake Dean provided a three-run homer in his first collegiate at-bat, and Charlie Furbush hurled five-plus scoreless innings.


On Saturday, Louis Coleman limited Saint Mary’s to one run in six innings as the Tigers were out-hit in winning their 17th straight non-conference series victory. In the series finale, LSU erupted for five runs in the first two innings and coasted to the victory. The Tigers got on the board in the first with a two-run homer from Sean Ochinko.


LSU plays at Stetson in Deland, Fla., on Friday (6 p.m.), Saturday (1 p.m.) and Sunday (noon).

Yvette Girouard’s softball team, ranked No. 7 in the nation, posted a 6-0 mark en route to claiming the Easton Tiger Classic on the LSU campus. The Tiger softball team outscored their opponents 37-6 in six games, which included a 7-2 victory over Memphis in the championship game on Sunday.


On Friday, the Lady Tigers beat Memphis, 3-1, and Middle Tennessee State, 6-2. On Saturday, LSU beat Missouri, 7-1, and Centenary, 9-0. The Lady Tigers beat Middle Tennessee State again on Sunday, 2-0.


LSU plays host to Louisiana-Monroe on Wednesday at 6 p.m., and then the Lady Tigers will travel to Houston this weekend to participate in the Houston Crowne Plaza Classic against Missouri State, Houston, Texas State, Indiana and Southern Illinois.

John Brady’s men’s basketball team kept its chance alive for an SEC Western Division title with a 71-67 win over Arkansas in the Maravich Assembly Center on Saturday.


After a 70-67 setback earlier in the week at Tennessee, Glen Davis scored 19 points, including a key 3-point play in the final minute, to end a six-game losing streak. Tasmin Mitchell added 16 points, while Terry Martin pumped in 13 points. Davis also chimed in with 18 rebounds.


The Tigers play at Ole Miss on Wednesday at 7 p.m. and then return home on Saturday for a 2 p.m. contest against Mississippi State.

Pokey Chatman’s Lady Tiger basketball team came up just short of beating fourth-ranked Connecticut on Sunday before 8,424 fans at the Maravich Assembly Center.

Down 72-69 with 6.7 seconds to play, LSU’s Porsha Phillips foot was on the 3-point line when her would-be tying jumper swished the net at the buzzer, allowing the Huskies to escape with the 72-71 victory. After Connecticut’s Renee Montgomery hit her fifth three-pointer of the game with 6.7 seconds to play, Phillips stepped back to shoot but her right foot was still on the 3-point line as she released the high-arching jumper.

Officials reviewed and upheld the call on the court of a two-point basket.

Earlier in the week, the Lady Tigers remained in contention for the conference title with a 79-66 win over Florida

The 21st-ranked men’s tennis team opened its dual match season with three shutouts over Southern, Centenary and Southern Miss, while the Lady Tigers beat San Diego and San Diego State on the road before dropping a 5-2 decision to 29 th-ranked Texas A&M on Sunday in College Station.

D. D. Breaux’s 12th-ranked gymnastics team posted an impressive 195.575 to 194.275 victory over 24th-ranked Kentucky in Lexington.

The victory ran LSU’s record to 6-4 overall and 2-1 in conference play.

The LSU swimming and diving team continued its impressive season with a pair of sixth-place finishes at the Southeastern Conference Championships this weekend. The LSU men, ranked No. 23, registered 276 points to record its best finish in the conference meet since the 2001 season.

The Lady Tiger swimming and diving team accumulated 254.5 points on its way to a sixth place finish, which marks the highest for the program since the 2002 meet.

The LSU football team also had a big week as they put together a recruiting class that was ranked as high as No. 2 in the nation. The first game this season is scheduled for Sept. 1 against Middle Tennessee at 7 p.m.
