It wasn’t a typical LSU defensive performance, but the Tiger defense was able to keep Alabama out of the end zone and post a 28-14 victory Saturday night in Baton Rouge in front of the second-largest crowd ever in Tiger Stadium (92,588).

With the victory, LSU upped its overall record to 8-2 and 4-2 in the Southeastern Conference. Alabama fell to 6-5 and 2-5. The Tigers still have an outside chance to play in the SEC Championship Game, but need some help. LSU has to win its next two games (Ole Miss and Arkansas) and have Mississippi State beat Arkansas this weekend. The LSU-Ole Miss contest is scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday and can only be seen on TigerVision.

Against Alabama, LSU quarterback JaMarcus Russell completed 18-of-21 passes for 207 yards and three touchdowns. The Tigers ran the ball well also, compiling 211 rushing yards. Keiland Williams was responsible for 79 yards on nine carries. Jacob Hester added 64 yards also on nine carries, while Russell contributed 36 as well.

Tiger receiver Early Doucet hauled in seven catches for 101 yards and a touchdown.

In all, LSU amassed 418 yards against Alabama, while allowing a year-high 369 yards to the Crimson Tide.

The Tigers started off the game with two touchdowns as Williams raced 38 yards for a score and Russell connected with Doucet for a 30-yard scoring completion in the first quarter.

But after that, the teams traded scores twice as Alabama never really seriously threatened the Tigers perfect home record this season.

WOMEN WIN SEASON-OPENER

LSU’s 10th-ranked women’s basketball team used a 33-0 run in the middle of the game on their way to a 64-25 victory over West Virginia in the season opener and the first game of the Basketball Travelers Classic on Sunday in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center.

The Lady Tigers (1-0) opened the game on an 8-0 run over the first six minutes, but West Virginia (0-1) tied the game with an 8-0 run of their own. LSU then outscored the Mountaineers 22-2 to end the half, including a 19-0 run to finish the first 20 minutes.

LSU led 30-10 at the break and expanded the lead by opening the second half with a 14-0 run. The Lady Tigers’ defense proved to be the difference. WVU was held without a point for the final eight minutes of the first half and the first five of the second half. LSU also forced 24 turnovers and held the Mountaineers to 20.5 percent shooting from the field.

Sylvia Fowles led all scorers with 12 points, six rebounds and three blocked shots for the Lady Tigers. RaShonta LeBlanc added 11 points for LSU, while Katie Antony added nine off the bench.

LSU shot 47.9 percent from the floor, including 54.5 percent in the second half. The Lady Tigers also outrebounded the Mountaineers, 39-24.

LADY TIGERS WIN SEC TITLE

On Senior Night in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center, the 11th-ranked LSU volleyball team clinched the outright Southeastern Conference Western Division title with a 30-22, 30-19, 30-28 sweep of Alabama on Friday night.

In front of a crowd of 1,064, the 11th largest attendance in school history, the Tigers improved to 23-4 on the season and 15-3 in SEC play.

It marks the first outright SEC Western Division championship for LSU, who shared the title with Arkansas last season.

Following the match, LSU honored its four seniors with presentations on the court. The Tigers sent four-year letterwinners Melody Clark, Lauren Leaumont, Kassi Mikulik and Daniela Romero, along with equipment manager Annie Beth Lemoine, out with a win in their final regular season home game of the season. Following the next two weeks of action on the road, LSU will await a bid in the NCAA Tournament, which could result in postseason matches being played in the Maravich Center in December.

Marina Skender led the match with 19 kills for the Tigers, while also posting a match high .459 hitting percentage. Kyna Washington recorded 10 kills while hitting at a .304 clip after coming on in the middle of the first game to replace Leaumont, who started the match. Mikulik led LSU with 15 digs. Romero posted 14 digs for LSU, while also recording 44 assists, for her 15th double-double of the year. Clark and DeGirolamo tied for the match high with four blocks each, including a pair of solo blocks each. Skender led the match with three service aces, while Michelle Hensgens added two for the Tigers.
