Maria Thomassie is a senior setter on E.D. White’s volleyball team. Throughout her time at E.D. White, Thomassie has been a part of one of the most successful volleyball teams in the state, finishing as the state runner-up three years in a row, from 2003 to 2005. This year, the Lady Cardinals enter the state playoffs as the No. 6 seed.

SN: How long have you been playing volleyball, and what got you involved in it?

MT: I’ve been playing since about fifth grade, so around seven years, now. I just started because I enjoyed volleyball and wanted something to participate in.

SN: As a senior, what is your favorite memory — and with your team’s success, there are probably a lot to choose from — about playing here at E.D. White?

MT: It would have to be last year in the playoffs, against Notre Dame. We played them in the semi-finals. We won the first game, then they won the next two. We won the last two games win the match. So last year, against Notre Dame.

SN: Who is your favorite opponent to play against?

MT: I like playing against Assumption. They’re a really good team, and whenever we play them it’s always a good match, even though they usually win, lately. It’s always a fun rivalry.

SN: What’s your favorite thing about playing volleyball here at E.D. White?

MT: I really like the girls on the team. I love playing with them, and it’s always fun to be around the team. So, just playing with the rest of the team.

SN: What position do you play, and can you talk about the responsibilities of that position?

MT: I play setter, so it’s my job to set the other girls up and get the assists. It’s kind of like the quarterback of the volleyball court.

SN: What are your plans for after high school?

MT: Go to school at LSU.

SN: Tell me one thing about coach Mary Cavell that only the team would know.

MT: Coach Cavell is tough, but she’s also very nice, and a really good coach. We know that she’s there for us if we need help, and she always very helpful.
