The Sports Network I-AA/FCS All-America team was announced earlier this week, and representing the Nicholls State Colonels on the prestigious list was senior offensive tackle Jacob Bender. Bender was named to the third team, and is the first Nicholls offensive lineman selected to the team since center Cody Stogner received the honor in 2005.

“We are proud of Jacob and everything that he has accomplished,” said head coach Jay Thomas. “He has worked hard his whole career here, and will continue to do so on the next level.”

Bender is only the fifth offensive lineman in Nicholls history to make the All-American squad. The highest honor a Colonel offensive lineman ever received was in 1985 when this year’s hall of fame inductee Lynn Bychurch was selected to the second team.

Lady Colonels fall to Nebraska

The Nebraska Cornhuskers proved to be more than the Nicholls Lady Colonels could handle, as the Huskers defeated the Lady Colonels, 80-42, Thursday evening at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.

Nicholls dropped to 2-8 on the season, while Nebraska improved to 10-2 overall.

Jamie Octave led the way for the Lady Colonels, scoring 14 points and grabbing down three rebounds. Claire Barry chipped in another 10 points and two rebounds.

As a team, Nicholls shot 32 percent from the field and 24 percent from beyond the arc. Nebraska shot 44 percent from the field and 45 percent from three-point range. The Huskers out rebounded the Lady Colonels, 47-27. Nebraska had 21 total assists to only seven by Nicholls.

Three Husker players scored in double-figures. Kelsey Griffin paved the way with a game-high 20 points, followed by Cory Montgomery’s 16 points and eight rebounds and Danielle Page’s 10 points and seven rebounds.

Nebraska jumped out to an early 11-0 lead 3:26 into the opening half. Nicholls cut the lead to 13-5 one minute later on a Barry three-pointer; however, the Huskers used a 10-4 run over the next 3:19 to break open the game at 23-9. Nebraska ended the half on a 21-7 run, to head into the locker room with a comfortable 44-16 lead.

An Octave three-point basket 26 seconds into the second half cut the Husker lead to 25 points, but that would be the closest the Lady Colonels would get for the remainder of the game, as Nebraska cruised to the 80-42 win.

Nicholls will look to make a fresh start in the new year, as the Lady Colonels return to action on Jan. 2 against the Ole Miss Rebels in Oxford, Miss. Tip off is set for 7 p.m.
