With the help of a Kim Phillips hat trick, the Texas State Bobcats defeated the Nicholls Colonels, 6-1, Sunday afternoon at the Bobcat Soccer Complex.

The Colonels fell to 4-11-1 on the season and 1-4 in the Southland Conference. The Bobcats improved to 4-10-2 overall, 2-1-2 in conference play.

Phillips gave the Bobcats an early 1-0 lead after scoring her first goal of the afternoon just 34 seconds into the match.

Nicholls answered with a goal from Jessica Schwartz in the 12th minute, but it was all the Colonels could muster in the game. Phillips scored her second goal less than a minute later, and Delayna Spivey scored off a header on a free kick from Elyse Ehlinger in the 19th minute as the Bobcats took a 3-1 lead into half time.

After Phillips completed her hat trick on a penalty kick in the 80th minute, Texas State scored goals in the 82nd and 86th minutes, giving the Bobcats, the 6-1 victory.

On Friday afternoon, the Colonels lost to Texas-San Antonio 6-0. The Roadrunners took a 2-0 lead in the first 13 minutes and extended that lead to 3-0 at halftime.

The Colonels will play their final home match on Friday, as they host Central Arkansas at 4 p.m. Nicholls will honor their five seniors prior to the start of the match.

Colonels’ volleyball teams get swept in consecutive matches

For the second consecutive day, the Nicholls Colonels were swept in a road conference match, falling to Sam Houston State, 30-26, 30-19, 30-25, Saturday evening in Johnson Coliseum.

The Colonels fell to 7-15 overall and 1-6 in the Southland Conference. The Bearkats evened their record at 9-9 on the season and 4-4 in conference play.

Kindra Halverson led Nicholls with 11 kills and five total blocks. Atina Porter added 10 kills, while Enjoli Ford and Chelsea Dockrey contributed 15 and 14 digs, respectively.

Sam Houston State’s Lindsey Roebken finished the night with a match-high 17 kills and six total blocks. Anna Ferguson and Cynthia Yarotsky contributed 12 and 10 kills, apiece. Melissa Sims added 20 digs for the Bearkats.

The opening set began with neither team able to pull away from the other. However, with Sam Houston State holding a 13-11 lead, the Colonels went on a 5-0 run, to open up a 16-13 advantage. The Bearkats answered by scoring four of the next five points to tie the score at 17-17.

After each team traded points, Sam Houston State took advantage of three straight Nicholls errors to retake the lead, 21-18. The Colonels could not close the gap to any closer than two points for the remainder of the set, falling by a score of 30-26.

The second set began much like the first, with the two teams hovering close to each other on the scoreboard. Once again, the Bearkats used a significant run to pull away and claim the set. Holding a slim 11-10 lead, the Bearkats extended out on a 14-4 run, to take a commanding 25-14 lead, and cruise to the second-set victory, 30-19.

The Bearkats benefited from five Nicholls errors to jump out to a 10-6 lead to begin the third set. The Colonels would never be as close as four points for the remainder of the set, until they closed the gap to 29-25 on a Rachel Spreen kill. However, Rhae Walderman followed with a kill of her own, to clinch the victory for Sam Houston State.

On Friday night, the Colonels dropped a match to Southland Conference Western Division leader Stephen F. Austin. The Lady Jacks swept Nicholls 30-11, 30-13 and 30-18.

Nicholls returns to action on Friday, as they host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 7 p.m. in Stopher Gymnasium.
