The Colonels ended a five-game homestand by losing the finale of the weekend conference opener to the Texas State Bobcats 10-0 on Sunday.

The game ended in the eighth inning as the 10-run Mercy Rule was applied.

Bobcats first baseman Paul Goldschmidt went 3-for-5, including two towering homeruns over right centerfield.

The game got away from the Colonels early on. After retiring the first two batters, pitcher Lance Dupuis gave up a single, a walk, and a 3-run homer to Goldschmidt in consecutive at-bats.

In the second inning, Dupuis hit three batters and allowed three more runs to score before coach Chip Durham pulled him from the game.

“He’s [Dupuis] battling a ankle injury, had some pain there,” said Durham. “Obviously he’s a lot better pitcher than that.”

Dupuis (0-2) gave up six runs on five hits in one-and-a-third innings.

Bobcats pitcher Zack Tritz (3-0) threw a complete game shutout, giving up six hits, striking out three, and walking one.

Jacob Sullivan relieved Dupuis and pitched a solid five-inning stretch before he wore down in the eighth. The Bobcats (10-5, 2,1 SLC) got four more runs in the inning, including a two-run homer by Goldschmidt, his second of the game.

Nicholls (3-12, 1-2 SLC) wasted its few opportunities to score in the contest. The Colonels stranded seven runners on base; however, only two were in scoring position.

“It’s depressing that we could do what we did last night (a 12-10 victory Saturday) and then to come out against their third-best guy, and the guy throws a complete game shutout against us,” said Durham.

Of the Colonels six hits, two came from left fielder Shane Barksdale and one from first baseman Brandt Boudreaux, which extends his hitting streak to 10 games.

This week, the Colonels play five of six straight road games, including a double-header against South Alabama in Mobile last night.

Nicholls travels to Lake Charles for a weekend series against rival McNeese State.
