The Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office announced last Monday that Nicholls State men’s golf coach James Schilling was arrested and charged with one count of theft.

The arrest stems from Schilling’s alleged role in a series of thefts over several years at the Bayou Country Club in Thibodaux, where Schilling is the golf pro.

According to Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office Spokeswoman Sgt. Lesley Hill, an investigation began at the country club Dec. 1 after officials learned the country club’s board thought thousands of dollars were missing from the pro shop.

Hill said the investigation revealed that Schilling, 35, allegedly removed money from cash receipts, beginning in March 2007. Hill added that a review of several years worth of receipts and paperwork indicated that up to $6,465.25 was taken, but the investigation is ongoing.

The spokeswoman also added that there’s no indication the money was used for Schilling’s position with Nicholls State.

The coach was brought in for questioning Dec. 22 and was arrested and charged with one count of theft. Hill said he was released from the Lafourche Parish Detention Center after posting a $1,000 bond.

Schilling has been the Nicholls State men’s golf coach for 11 seasons. Repeated attempts to contact Nicholls State University Athletics Director Rob Bernardi regarding Schilling’s status with the university were unreturned.
