Sam Houston State defeated Nicholls 7-1 to complete the series sweep on Sunday.


In the loss, senior Kat Harrell went 2-for-3 to become the Colonels’ all-time career hit leader with 235. She also stands seventh on the Southland Conference’s all-time hit list.

The Colonels (25-25, 12-12 SLC) only scored two runs in the three-game series.


The Bearkats (29-25, 14-10 SLC) scored twice in the fourth inning and five runs in the sixth to blow the game open.


For the game, Nicholls scored one run (RBI double by Audrey Wood) on eight hits with one error while Sam Houston State scored seven runs on eight hits with no errors.

Senior Krystalin Ensminger (8-12) picked up the loss allowing six runs on seven hits through five innings.


The Colonels host McNeese State this weekend to close out the home part of their 2008 schedule.


GROS LSWA PITCHER OF THE WEEK

Sophomore Lacey Gros was named LSWA Pitcher of the Week for March 31-April 6.


During that week, Gros was a perfect 2-0 while boasting a 0.00 ERA and 12 strikeouts. The Schriever native picked up wins over South Alabama and Northwestern State that week.

NSU GOLF TEAMS END SEASON

Nicholls’ golf teams ended their 2008 seasons at their respective Southland Conference tournament last weekend.

The men’s team finished last, shooting a combined 910 (+60) for the tournament at Gray Plantation in Lake Charles. Lamar claimed their third consecutive title and 22nd overall.

Junior Marty Reed did best among NSU’s seven-person team, tying for 24th place with a 12-over-par 228.

NSU TENNIS TEAM SPLITS MATCHES

Nicholls men’s tennis team split its last two matches of the season last week. On Tuesday, they lost at home to Southeastern 4-3, but on Wednesday they bounced back to Alcorn St. 5-0 on the road.

The Colonels finished the season 12-7, (2-4 SLC).

The Lady Colonels swept Alcorn St. 6-0 last Wednesday in their final match of the season. Their record is 14-7 (3-6 SLC).

The tennis teams travel to Nacogdoches, Texas, for the Southland Conference Tournament beginning Friday.
