Nicholls duo set for Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame

Two former Nicholls State athletes are set to receive arguably the state’s highest athletic honor later this month.

Former Colonel standout wide receiver Mark Carrier and basketball star Larry Wilson will be a part of the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame’s 2010 Class.

The duo will be honored at a ceremony in Natchitoches on June 24.

Carrier left Nicholls as the school’s leader in receptions, receiving yards and touchdowns.

Wilson was a three-time All-American and notched 42 school records, most notably the school scoring record.

Tickets for the event can be purchased by calling (318) 238-4255.

Colonels’ Comer named

LSWA Hitter of the Week

What does a .700 batting average in a week do for a player?

In Nicholls State junior outfielder Bear Comer’s case, it won him the Louisiana Sports Writers Association’s Hitter of the Week Award.

Comer got 10 base hits in 14 official at-bats in the Colonels’ final week of the regular season, while having a .857 slugging percentage.

The junior added to his impressive week in the team’s opening-round game of the Southland Conference Tournament and swatted two hits.

Comer was the fifth Colonel to take home a LSWA award this season, joining Chase Jaramillo, Tyler Minto, Keith Kulbeth and Clint Dempster as LSWA Award Winners.

LSU’s Skupski drops match at NCAA Singles Championships

LSU men’s tennis sophomore Neal Skupski qualified for the NCAA Singles Championships, but lost in the first round, dropping a 7-6, 6-3 decision to North Carolina’s Clay Donato.

Ranked No. 50 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), Skupski ended the season with 17 singles wins and was LSU’s team MVP.

“This was a great experience for Neal,” said LSU coach Jeff Brown. “He will use this as a spark for next season.”
