LSU Track and Field takes Top 5 ranking into championships:

The LSU men and women’s track teams both hold Top 5 rankings heading into this week’s NCAA Championships.

The men’s team will carry a No. 3 ranking into the championships, trailing No. 2 Oregon and No. 1 Texas A&M.

The Lady Tigers are one notch below the men’s team and head into Nationals ranked No. 4, trailing No. 3 Oregon, No. 2 Florida and No. 1 Texas A&M.

In total, LSU has 32 scoring opportunities at the national meet, good enough to make the Tigers one of the favorites to win the national championship for both teams.

Nationals begin Wednesday and span through Saturday and will take place in Eugene, OR.

Two former Tigers win Corbett Awards:

Former LSU pitcher Louis Coleman and former LSU gymnast Susan Jackson have won the 2010 Corbett Awards, an award given annually to the top male and female amateur athletes in the state.

The award is based on performance in the 2009 athletic season.

Coleman earned the award after serving as an ace on LSU’s 2009 National Championship team. The right-hander struck out 142 batters in 25 appearances for the Tigers, while also winning 14 games.

Like Coleman, Jackson was also a National Champion, winning the NCAA All-Around national title, while also winning the National Championship on beam.

The award has been handed out since 1967, and has usually been a prelude to future success. Two members of the NBA Hall of Fame, seven Olympic gold medallists and 14 NFL players have won the honor.

Colonels’ coach, freshman take home LSWA honors:

After a record-setting men’s tennis season, Nicholls coach Jim Hunter was named the Louisiana Sportswriters Association men’s tennis Coach of the Year on Thursday.

Joining Hunter on the list of honorees was Dmitry Kozionov, who was named the freshman of the year in the state.

“This is a great honor for our teams and the individuals recognized,” said Hunter. “Our teams really put in the extra effort to be better than their opponents, and I’m proud of all of them for their accomplishments this season.”

Kozionov also was named to the First-Team All Louisiana team, thanks to a 15-4 singles record.

As a team, the men’s team went 14-6, marking the most wins the team had ever achieved in a season.

Also making the LSWA men’s teams were Radu Ionescu (First-Team), Phenyo Matong (Honorable Mention).

On the women’s teams, Florina Nosca (Second Team) and Natalia Zamora (Honorable Mention) were honored.

Dempster named to Southland All-Tournament Team:

After pitching a complete game in the Southland Conference Tournament, Nicholls junior hander Clint Dempster was named to the Southland Conference’s All-Tournament team.

The lefty stifled the tournament’s top seed, Texas State, pitching eight innings, before the game was called off because of the Colonels’ 13-2 lead.

Dempster’s victory was the first for the program in 12 years.

The Thibodaux native is the first Colonel since Rondon Anderson to earn Southland All-Tournament honors.

Hornets coaching search continues:

According to the Associated Press, the Hornets know who they’d like to coach their team – Celtics assistant coach Tom Thibodeau.

But thanks to Thibodeau’s commitment to coaching his team in the NBA Finals, the Hornets may be forced to look in another direction.

According to both the AP and ESPN, the team may not be willing to wait until mid June when the Finals are complete, and may now turn their attention to Trail Blazers’ assistant Monty Williams.

According to ESPN, the team is possibly considering that direction, also, because star guard Monty Williams is excited about playing for Williams – a former Gregg Popovich understudy.

The team has said previously they’d like to have a coach in place prior to the start of free agency, which begins July 1.

LSU women’s golf coach named Kentucky head coach:

LSU women’s golf assistant coach Golda Johansson Borst was named the head coach at Kentucky Thursday.

Borst was the women’s golf coach in Baton Rouge for three seasons. She was also a collegiate golfer at Tennessee.

During her time as an assistant coach, the Lady Tigers advanced to three NCAA Regionals, won three tournaments and had three individual wins.

“We are going to miss Golda very much at LSU,” said women’s golf coach Karen Bahnsen. “But we are also very excited for this opportunity for her to go to Kentucky as head coach. This is one of her dreams to be a head coach in the Southeastern Conference.”
