Colonels to be featured twice on Southland TV Network

The Southland Conference announced the Nicholls football team will be televised twice in the 2010 season on the upstart Southland Conference TV network.

The Colonels’ Nov. 13 road game against Northwestern State will be featured on the network.

Just five days later, the team’s season finale – a home Thursday night tilt on Nov. 18 against Southeastern Louisiana will be on the network.

The Southland Conference TV network will enter its third year in 2010, and league commissioner Tom Burnett said he is excited to see the network continue to grow.

It is currently shown in the Dallas, San Antonio, Austin and New Orleans markets.

“The Southland Network has continued to grow, and more broadcasters have expressed interest in our programming.

LSU’s Gibbs named All-American

LSU catcher Micah Gibbs has been named to the 2010 National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association’s second-team All-American team.

The All-American honor is another feather in the already named first-team All-SEC selection’s cap.

Gibbs was LSU’s leading hitter this season and hit .388 with 10 home runs and 60 RBI. The solid junior season earned Gibbs’ a third-round selection from the Chicago Cubs in the 2010 MLB Draft.

Throughout his career, Gibbs has hit with a .336 career average, including 46 doubles, 18 homers and 137 RBI.

He was a member of the 2008 United States National team – a team that won a gold medal at the World Championships.

Tiger draftees Landry, Ross sign with pro teams

A pair of LSU baseball players made their professional dreams a reality this past week.

LSU third round draft pick Leon Landry signed a professional contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers and eighth round pick Austin Ross inked a deal with the Milwaukee Brewers.

Landry earned his spot in the professional ranks after hitting with a .338 average in his junior season.

The centerfielder was also one of the best defensive players in America.

Ross was LSU’s most consistent pitcher throughout the season, and recorded a 5-4 record with a 5.22 ERA in 13 starts.

Both players are expected to begin their professional careers soon and begin playing rookie ball this summer.

Saints showcase Super Bowl rings

The New Orleans Saints received the fruits of their labor this week when the team was given their Super Bowl rings.

The team had a ceremony at a downtown New Orleans hotel, and current players and even players who have since left the team were in attendance.

The rings feature yellow gold with a fleur-de-lis has circular diamonds, and the words “World Champions.”

Helping create the pieces were Tiffany & Co.

“We feel that the entirety of the greatness of the moments surrounding the Saints’ Super Bowl XLIV victory have been captured in the design of the rings,” said Saints’ owner Tom Benson in a statement issued by the team.

Bush pledges to clear name; help alma mater USC

New Orleans Saints halfback Reggie Bush has been in the news this week – for all the wrong reasons.

Bush has been at the center of the NCAA’s recently completed investigation of the USC athletic department – an investigation that has ended with several of the Trojans’ sports (including football) being placed on probation.

The investigation’s results will force the Trojans to vacate all of the victories the team had during games Bush participated, because he “received benefits.”

But despite what the report said, Bush said he will help USC in its appeal to the NCAA. “Those people don’t know me,” Bush told nola.com. “This thing regarding USC and the NCAA is to me the closest thing to death without dying.”

Thibodaux figher loses at UFC 115

MMA heavyweight fighter Pat Barry took momentum into his latest UFC fight, having scored a win against veteran Antoni Hardonk.

But the New Orleans-born and Thibodaux trained fighter wasn’t able to build on that momentum and lost to Mirko Cro Cop at UFC 115.

Barry competed tough for the majority of the fight, but Cro Cop was able to submit the 248-pound fighter with just 30 seconds to go in the bout.

The loss put Barry at 5-2 in his MMA career.

It is not yet known when he will fight next.

Nicholls volleyball coach resigns

Nicholls State volleyball coach Chris Laird resigned on Monday after five seasons with the team.

In his tenure with the Colonels, Laird led the team to the Southland Conference Tournament two times.

Overall, Laird had a 40-90 record with Nicholls.

The athletic department issued a statement on Monday saying the search for a new coach would begin immediately.
