E.D. White and Vandebilt Catholic kicked off the 2006 Brothers of the Sacred Heart Soccer Tournament last Friday morning with Vandebilt spoiling the party for the host Cardinals.

While neither team seriously threatened for the majority of the match, the Terriers (2-3-1) controlled possession for most of the morning, which helped them to a 1-0 win.

The ability to control possession was not lost of Vandebilt assistant coach Matt Kelso. However, he said he would have liked to see better finishing from the strikers. “The game was in their half for about 90-percent of the time,” said Kelso. “It was just poor decision making (on Vandy’s part). We just need to get more clinical in front of the goal. Just relax and play the game the way it’s supposed to be played.”

On the other bench, first-year E.D. White (1-3) coach Roger Bimah said the players having little time on their first touch rattled them. “It was a high-pressure game,” said Bimah. “The players didn’t have a lot of time on the ball. Whenever that happens, they revert back to their lowest form, when they learned to play—just kicking the ball into a space, and hope somebody goes and gets it.

“It’s unusual, because we never do any of that in training,” Bimah added. “The pressure boggled us.”

The game’s first real scoring opportunity came late in the first half when a Vandebilt attacker dribbled to the top of the penalty box and took a shot that sailed just over the crossbar.

Other than that, neither team threatened the other in the first half. However, early in the second half, Vandebilt created opportunities with runs along the wings, but a combination of offside calls and errant passes cost them scoring chances.

Then in the 46th minute, Vandebilt put itself on the board, after a player was fouled near the top of the penalty box, creating a set-play opportunity. Off the ensuing free kick, Scott Bergeron sent a curling cross in front of the goal and Jeff Deblieux headed it past E.D. White goalkeeper Beau Crochet, into the back of the net.

Vandebilt controlled the remainder of the match, but errant touches resulted in missed opportunities. “We didn’t (play correctly) today,” said Kelso. “This game is fine, though, because we’re only (beginning) the season. It’s going to be a long season, and if we progress each and every game, we’ll be OK.”

Bimah had the sentiment about his E.D. White team. “This is our second game,” he said, “and we’re way ahead of our schedule of where I thought we’d be. So I’m very optimistic about our guys. We had some chances but (Vandebilt) took better chances. It’s an unforgiving game. You make a mistake, and they punish you. That’s what happened.

“They’re a top-quality side. We need to play more teams like them, so our guys can see what its like at the next level. We’re not there yet, and obviously, Vandebilt’s been playing at that level for a longer time.”
