Vandebilt Catholic took home the boys overall title while the Terrebonne girls team won its second straight meet at the Tiger/Brave Relays last Thursday.

The Terriers finished first with 119 points in boys’ events. Terrebonne came in second with 99, and South Lafourche got third with 82.

Girls’ competition was tighter with Terrebonne compiling 111 points, second place Central Lafourche scoring 108 and third place Assumption getting 104.

Vandebilt dominated the pole vault events on both sides. Rachel and Amber Laurent came in first and second for the girls with leaps of 13 feet, 10 inches and 10 feet, 6 inches, respectively.

In the boy’s event, Chris Watson and Joara Johnson finished first and third respectively, with jumps of 14 feet, 8 inches and 12 feet.

“It’s like knowing you’re going to get 18 points automatically on each side,” said Vandebilt coach Mark King.

Terrebonne won seven girls’ events, including double victories by Alaine Verdin (long jump and high jump) and Skyla Jackson (1,600- and 3,200 meter runs).

The squad also won in the 400- and 1,600-meter relays and Cierra Bonvillain won the 800-meter run.

“Improvement is not the word,” said Terrebonne track coach Chelsey Lucas . “My girls have proven the whole Terrebonne wrong. They didn’t have that team togetherness, but now they’re gelling.”

H.L. Bourgeois’ Caleb Williams took home boys’ field MVP honors for wins in the triple jump, 200- and 400-meter dashes and second place in the long jump.

Terrebonne’s Alaine Verdin and Central Lafourche’s Kiera Smith were named co-MVPs in girls’ field events. Verdin won the high jump and was a member of the winning 400- and 1,600-meter relay teams. Smith finished first in the discus and shot put.

Rachel Laurent also won the girls’ 100-meter dash in 12.09. During the pole vault, she attempted to break the national record with a 14 foot, 2 inches but failed on three tries.
