There was no need to visit other schools.

Once Vandebilt Catholic senior Monique Lefort returned from Duquesne University, she knew exactly where she wanted to continue her swimming career.

“They (Duquesne coaches) made me feel really welcome,” said Lefort of her Sept. 28 visit to the private Atlantic 10 school, located in downtown Pittsburgh. “I had a feeling that I really belonged at Duquesne and didn’t want to visit anywhere else.”

Lefort, 17, inked her letter of intent last week, choosing the Lady Dukes over Virginia Tech and Oakland (Michigan).

She leaves behind a Lady Terriers program that has captured four consecutive Division II state championships.

Along the way, Lefort has won seven individual state titles.

Lefort won the 100-meter butterfly (57.16 seconds) and the 100 breaststroke (1:08.20) last month at the LHSAA/State Farm Class 4A championships in Sulphur.

Her butterfly time earned her All-American accolades.

“Monique has been one of the strongest female swimmers in recent years,” said Vandebilt coach Duane Ring.

But it’s intangible qualities Ring feels especially set her apart.

“Monique is just a good all-around kid,” she added. “She never has anything bad to say about anyone, and she’s a true leader and true team-first person. She has a strong work ethic and a good personality, and she’s able to get along with anyone. She’d be an asset to any (collegiate) swimming program.”

Lefort is excited about moving to the Steel City, which is a sharp contrast to southern Louisiana.

“The weather is beautiful because there’s no humidity,” Lefort said. “I like how the school is downtown – everything is within walking distance. I’m also really excited about seeing some snow.”

She also leaves an indelible mark on the Lady Dukes swim program.

“I want to break all of their records,” Lefort added. “I think I could do it right now. The (top) times look close.”
