Week 2 news and notes in the Tri-parishes:

3: The number of LSU commitments who played in Patterson’s nationally-televised game against Redemptorist. Lumberjack halfback Kenny Hilliard joined Redemptorist lineman La’El Collins and halfback Jeremy Hill on the gridiron for the game that was showcased on ESPNU.

2: The number of local teams still unbeaten after two weeks of play. The sole survivors are Terrebonne and South Terrebonne, who scored wins against Ellender and Lafayette, respectively in Week 2.

37: The number of points South Terrebonne’s offense accumulated in the first half of their 44-12 victory against Ellender.

SportsNet Week 2

Players of the Week:

Bronze: Terrebonne quarterback Mike Williams – Williams proved to be a dual-threat once more in a win against Lafayette, hurling for 146 yards and rushing for more than 60 yards in the Tigers’ win.

Silver: South Terrebonne defensive back Tyler Naquin – The usually pesky offensive player proved to be an equally explosive defender, intercepting a pass and returning it for a touchdown in the Gators’ big win against Ellender.

Gold: Ellender wide receiver Jermaine Johnson – For the second-straight week, the Patriots fell on the wrong side of the scoreboard. But it wasn’t because of a lack of effort from Johnson, who caught four passes for 108 yards and a pair of touchdowns against South Terrebonne.

The Super 6 power rankings (ranking Casey Gisclair’s six best Tri-parish teams):

1. Terrebonne – The Tigers rolled to 2-0 with a very impressive win against Lafayette. Mike Williams continues to impress, and the Terrebonne defense continuously keeps opposing offenses off balance.

2. South Terrebonne – Like their Houma neighbors, South Terrebonne also improved to 2-0. Sure, the Gators had superior talent to Ellender, but anytime you score 37 points in a half, you have to be impressed.

3. Vandebilt – The Terriers took a step back in the win/loss records, but a step up in our poll after a very impressive showing against St. Charles, who is a perennial top-tier team.

4. Thibodaux – Thibodaux turned over the football entirely too much to expect to beat a team like Destrehan. Back to the drawing board for the Tigers.

5. Central Lafourche – Central Lafourche showed their inexperience in a loss to Teurlings Catholic. But they’ll be back. They have plenty of talent in that locker room.

6. Patterson – The Jacks are 0-2, and I’m sure people are wondering why I’m keeping them in this list. But they’ve played two of the best teams in the entire state. When their schedule dumbs down, they’ll win their share.

South Lafourche senior halfback Justin Galjour grapples for yardage during the team’s spring scrimmage against McDonogh 35. The Tarpons faced a stiff test this past weekend against Columbia High School, and lost a 30-19 contest. COURTESY PHOTO
