SportsNet Week 4

Players of the Week:

Bronze: Central Lafourche halfbacks Bryson Davis and Jordan Caillouet, With Central Lafourche in dire need of a win, Davis and Caillouet willed the Trojans’ offense, combining for 35 carries and 190 yards rushing and two touchdowns.

Silver: South Terrebonne’s defense, The Gators’ offense often steals the headlines with its vast array of playmakers and skill players. But Friday, South Terrebonne’s defense proved its merit, too, holding E.D. White to just six points, while also recovering a fumble for a touchdown.

Gold: Vandebilt fullback Aaron Smith, With so many of his teammates on the sidelines, Smith picked up the slack Friday, gutting St. James’ defense for 159 yards on 21 carries to help the beaten up and bruised Terriers get back to .500 on the season.

The Super 6 power rankings (ranking Casey Gisclair’s six best Tri-parish teams):

1. Patterson. The Lumberjacks proved they aren’t immortal this week and actually allowed a few points. But despite the 11 points allowed, the Jacks scored 35 of their own and rolled to another victory.

2. South Terrebonne. South Terrebonne is good. Really, really good. Anytime you can embarrass E.D. White as bad as the Gators did, you know you’re doing something right. The Cardinals have a good football team, make no mistake about it, Friday’s score is just a testament to just how good these Gators are.

3. Central Catholic. It’s a bit of a bummer that Central Catholic’s bid at a perfect season ended Friday. But don’t expect a pattern of imperfection from what is still a very, very good football team.

4. Vandebilt Catholic. After ranking one, two and three, there’s such a huge gap among the rest of the teams. Vandebilt’s the best of the rest after improving to 2-2 with a gutty win against St. James. They need to get healthy before the teeth of district play begins.

5. E.D. White. It’s hard to keep a team in the rankings that just got beat by more than 30 points. But I’ve seen E.D. White with my own eyes, I know they are a sound football team. South Terrebonne will beat many more teams by a wide margin this season.

You can count on that.

6. Thibodaux. I might get some heat for putting an 0-4 team on this list. But the Tigers have truly played four of the best teams in the state and have suffered close defeats in each contest. If Thibodaux doesn’t win Friday, I’ll be incredibly surprised and will be happy to eat a giant bowl of crow and admit I’m wrong.

Central Lafourche coach Travis Douglas talks to his team during a spring practice. Douglas earned the first win of his head coaching career Friday as his Trojans defeated H.L. Bourgeois. CASEY GISCLAIR
