SportsNet Week 6 Players of the Week

Bronze: Vandebilt halfback Aaron Smith, With Vandebilt in dire need of a win, Smith stepped to the plate and hit a home run. The Terriers’ bruiser rushed the football 21 times for 135 yards and three touchdowns in Vandebilt’s rebound win against H.L. Bourgeois.

Silver: Patterson high school offense, The Lumberjacks’ offense rolled again dominating Abbeville’s defense in a 47-6 shellacking. The Jacks average 47.5 points per game for the season and 55 points per game in the last three games. Another run to the Dome is in the cards for these guys.

Gold: Terrebonne halfback Robert Gordon, For the second-straight week, Gordon makes this list, this time taking home the top prize. The Tigers halfback carried the ball 22 times for 182 yards and two touchdowns in the Tigers’ tight-knit district win against Thibodaux.

The Super 6 Preseason Power Rankings (ranking Casey Gisclair’s six best Tri-parish teams)

1. Patterson. The Lumberjacks have now won three-straight games by 40 points or more. This squad is just the peak of impressive. A sure-fire lock to go 9-0 with all of the wins in blowout fashion.

2. Central Catholic. After giving up 28 points in a loss to Northlake Christian, the Eagles have allowed just six points in their last three games. If the other team doesn’t score, you’ll never lose. That’s a good formula going forward for St. Mary Parish’s second in command.

3. South Terrebonne. The Gators have now lost two out of three games after a 5-0 start. But don’t look too deeply into the numbers, a lot of teams will look silly when Assumption is the team on their schedule. That’s a heck of a squad!

4. Morgan City. Who would have thought Morgan City would be a five-win football team? The Tigers are there, now the challenge is winning one of the next three against the big dogs of its district.

5. South Lafourche. With New Iberia and Westgate off the schedule, the Tarpons have three-straight winnable games to close the slate with a .500 record. It will be interesting to see if that’d be enough to punch the team a spot in the playoffs. The power rankings seem to say otherwise.

6. Terrebonne. Kudos to the Tigers for winning their second-straight district game in a hard-fought battle with Thibodaux. It’s not easy to defend a district championship with a young roster and Terrebonne has struggled this season, but the team is peaking at the right time, the sign of a well coached squad.
