Longtime Vandebilt Catholic staff member and former Terriers state runner-up baseball coach Calvin Buxton died on Tuesday morning at his home in Gray.

Vandebilt Media Coordinator Lisa Vegas confirmed Buxton’s death on Tuesday afternoon, stating in a news release that the school, its faculty and its students were in need of prayers as they grieved the loss of Buxton.

The local coach was a Vandebilt stalwart – a man who had been with the school for close to 30 years, dating back to 1987.

He served three tenures as the Terriers baseball coach, helping make the team a statewide power. In Buxton’s career, Vandebilt twice was the state runner-up and six times made it to the Final Four.

After news of Buxton’s passing became public, a slew of current and former Vandebilt student athletes paid their respects on social media.

The Vandebilt Catholic Football Facebook page posted a photo honoring the coach’s time with the school. In 24 hours, the picture had generated 464 likes and 212 shares.

“I’m proud to have been a member of that 1992 (runner-up) team,” Jared LeBoeuf said in a Facebook comment. “(I’m) gonna miss you, Coach.”

“I had him as a teacher, and he was amazing,” Phillip Campo added. “Rest in peace, Coach.”

The cause of Buxton’s death is not yet known.

Vegas said the school will update the media on arrangements when that information becomes available.
