There is now less than a week left before the Houma Heart and Soles Half-Marathon & 5K. Terrebonne General Medical Center (TGMC) and Cardiovascular Institute of the South (CIS) have some important, last-minute tips to help you get ready for the race this weekend.

When training in these final days, cut down your mileage by about one-third, but keep your normal pace for the most part. Slowing too much can alter your stride or make you feel sluggish. You should also take at least one or two days off from running the week of the half-marathon, to give your muscles a chance to rest and prepare for the rigorous race ahead.

Final Week Schedule

Wednesday – three-mile run or cross train (swimming, biking or elliptical)

Thursday – four mile run easy and stretching and strength training

Friday – Rest

Saturday – Race Day

Sunday – Rest and celebrate

You should be particularly aware of your diet this week. Too much of one thing and not enough of another can really affect your race-day performance. The bottom line is to relax, both mentally and physically and to drink plenty of fluids.
