Fresh off its most successful season in school history, the Nicholls State University soccer team is flexing its recruiting muscles in international circles.

Colonels coach Dylan Harrison announced this week the signings of Mie Elvestad and Emily Werenskiold, a pair of players who will be eligible for the team’s upcoming 2014 season.

Both youngsters are natives of Norway and will join a strong core of players that took the team to a 12-6-2 record a year ago.

“With a great group of returners and what I believe to be the most talented (recruiting) class from top-to-bottom, I can’t help but to get excited about the upcoming year,” Harrison said.

In Elvestad and Werenskiold, the Colonels will be getting two of the top prep players in Norway.

Elvestad lands in Thibodaux after a decorated youth career. She advanced to the Norwegian First Division in the 2013 season – the second-highest division in the country’s women’s football league system. The prospect also was a member of the Ovrevoll Hosle team that won a gold medal in the 2011 Norway Cup, a tournament that hosts 1,700 teams from 60 countries each year.

Elvestad hails from Lierskogen, Norway.

“Mie is a strong center mid that has the chance to train on a club team with the very best players in Norway,” Harrison said. “Mie will come to Nicholls with a maturity that a few players possess at such a young age.”

For the Colonels, Elvestad will likely play right away. The coach said he envisions his incoming player holding several midfield positions early in her career.

“We will look to use Mie in a number of roles in the center of the midfield,” Harrison said. “She can keep the ball, as well as get forward and score goals. Mie is helping us strengthen what we feel is an important part of our style of play.

“I can’t wait to see Mie in action.”

Werenskiold will likely join Elvestad in action within the Colonels’ future starting midfield.

A native of Hosle, Norway, Werenskiold also advanced to the Norwegian First Division in 2013 and played with Elvestad for the successful 2011 Norway Cup team.

Werenskiold has competed for the bandy World Championships while in high school. She has said that she hopes to become a member of her native country’s national team in the future.

“Emily is a dynamic outside back or mid,” Harrison said. “She is quick and comfortable with the ball. She will fit great into our system that requires our wingers to play both ways with a true intensity. Her speed allows her to run at players in the attack, as well as cover ground getting back on the defense.”
