Nicholls State third-year baseball coach Seth Thibodeaux believes he has a team capable of pushing for the 2013 Southland Conference championship.

He’ll find out pretty early in the season if that assumption is correct – the Colonels will play an impressive schedule in the upcoming year.

Headlined by two meetings with LSU and also a road trip to San Jose State, the Colonels will play one of the most difficult schedules they’ve had in recent years – a grind Thibodeaux said is designed with one purpose: to ready the team for Southland Conference play.

“This will be one of the most challenging schedules we’ve put together since I’ve been here, and every game on the schedule is to get us prepared for another strong year in the Southland,” Thibodeaux said. “The teams we have next year all come from strong conferences and backgrounds, as this team will have to be prepared every night to fight for a win.”

The first pitch of Nicholls’ season will take place on Feb. 15 in a three-game series with Houston Baptist.

The Huskies played a Southland-heavy schedule in 2012 and found success, scoring victories against McNeese State, Stephen F. Austin, Texas-Arlington and Lamar.

Houston Baptist also played Texas to a close defeat in 2012 – dropping a 2-0 ballgame in late February.

Following the season-opening series, the Colonels will return home for a five-game homestand.

The Colonels will host Southern on Feb. 20 and Tulane on Feb. 26. Between those games, Nicholls will host Towson for a three-game slate from Feb. 22-24.

Nicholls will also host Sacred Heart from March 8-10.

Thibodeaux said having teams from the Northeast on the schedule is important because of the success they’ve had in recent seasons.

Last year, the Colonels hosted Stony Brook, who advanced to the College World Series.

“There’s a lot of great baseball being played on the East Coast, so bringing in Towson and Sacred Heart was big,” Thibodeaux said. “Last year Stony Brook opened its season in our tournament and obviously they went on to great things.”

In addition to the northeastern foes, the Colonels will also take on in-state foes throughout the season.

Nicholls will play two games at LSU – on March 3 and March 12.

They will also travel to take on Louisiana-Lafayette on Feb. 27, Southern on March 6 and Tulane on April 2 and May 7.

The Colonels will also host UNO on March 26 and ULL on April 16.

The weekend before Southland Conference play, Nicholls will make a road trip to the West Coast and will play a three-game weekend tilt against San Jose State from March 15-17.

The following weekend, they will return home to open Southland play against Stephen F. Austin – a series that will be played from March 22-24.

Nicholls will play its annual home-and-away series against Southeastern from March 28-30.

They will also host McNeese State and Northwestern State during the Southland slate.

The Southland Conference Tournament will begin May 22 and will be played in Sugar Land, Texas this season.
