The 2019-20 athletic season begins on Friday for Nicholls State University.
The Colonels will host Mississippi Valley State at the Nicholls Soccer Complex, the start of the season for the both teams.
Nicholls is under the direction of first-year head coach Danny Free. The team was picked to finish last in the Southland Conference, but Free said his team is not believing in those prognostications, but they’re instead eager to get off to a strong start to the year.
The Colonels play their first four matches of the year at home in 2019.
“After two preseason exhibitions, I feel that we know each other as a team and we have a good idea of who’s going to play where,” Free said. “Now we’re starting to get into the swing of things, and the body is starting to adapt to playing and training again. Opening the season with four home games has some real positives, the biggest of which is the girls know this place. Traveling hours on a bus affects preparation and your overall mentality, so just the fact that they can show up and feel comfortable in the environment means a ton.”
Nicholls returns its goalkeeper, Roosa Hurmerinta, who posted 12 starts last year.
Offensively, the team will rely on strikers Blaire Laiche and Kristy Helmers to score goals.
Defensively, Jeanne Harson and Caroline Morton are among the top returning back-line anchors.
Kickoff for the match is set for 4 p.m.
The same two teams play again Saturday at 3.
