Prep football Week 10 By the Numbers

7 – The number of points Patterson has allowed in its final three games of the season. The Lumberjacks enter the Class 3A playoffs smoldering hot, winners of four games in a row.

12 – The number of consecutive games South Lafourche has won – the longest winning streak in the Tri-parish area. The Tarpons added onto its tally in a blowout win against Thibodaux.

100 – The total number of points Vandebilt and Ellender combined for in a thrilling shootout game at South Terrebonne’s stadium. Vandebilt emerged from the slug-fest with a 64-36 win.

Week 10 Players of the Week

Bronze – Ellender quarterback Dustin Creppel – Creppel’s fabulous season ended in style Friday, completing 12-of-21 passes for 274 yards and four touchdowns. With another season to play at Ellender, we would like to formally nominate Creppel as the preseason pick to be a 2013 Casey Award Winner. The kid is dynamite and has a true rocket for an arm.

Silver – Houma Christian halfback Nate Frye – In a playoff-clinching win against Ridgewood, Frye played arguably his best game, rushing for 203 yards on just six carries with three touchdowns.

Gold – Vandebilt Catholic quarterback Elijah McGuire – The All-World Terrier standout saved his best game for last. McGuire rushed for an astounding 402 yards with five touchdowns in Vandebilt’s win against Ellender. The gashing yardage pushed McGuire past 2,000 yards rushing for the season.

The Power 6 (Ranking the top six teams in the area, according to Sports Editor Casey Gisclair)

1. South Lafourche – The Tarpons enter the playoffs with a perfect 9-0 record. Expect a wild and crazy crowd Friday night in Galliano. These guys surely won’t want to have their season end within Ralph Pere Field.

2. Vandebilt – I’ve been watching Louisiana prep football since the mid-1990s. I’m only old enough to accurately judge players that I’ve seen from about 2000 until now. Besides former five-star prospect and current New York Giant Ryan Perrilloux, Elijah McGuire is the best high school football player that I’ve ever seen. He is an unquestioned All-State selection and is easily the MVP of the entire Tri-parish area.

3. Patterson – Don’t look now but the Jacks are playing dominant defense to go with their always potent offense. Don’t be shocked if they score a first round upset and shake up the entire Class 3A bracket.

4. Terrebonne – The Tigers needed a win against Istrouma to squeak into the Class 5A playoffs. They got it in blowout fashion, scoring a 41-0 win. Terrebonne will enter the playoffs hot, having won four of its past five games.

5. E.D. White – The Cardinals may have lost Friday for the fourth time in six weeks, but there’s truly no shame in being defeated by St. Charles Catholic by just four points. E.D. White has a team capable of pushing forward in the playoffs.

6. Central Catholic – A shot at a district championship slipped through the Eagles’ hands Friday night in a loss to Vermilion Catholic. Despite defeat, Central Catholic remains poised to make a run in Class 1A.
